In my 20 or so years of riding the NYC subways, I’ve seen my fair share of heinous subway behaviors.  I complain periodically to my husband after a particularly harrowing ride so maybe it’s time I put together my list of Non X-rated Top 10 Subway Pet Peeves in order of amount of distress they cause me…

Old Stone House Turns Green

Chris Ramirez for The New York Times

Chris Ramirez for The New York Times

I love stone houses (it’s the medieval castle feeling) and I love New Paltz, so this old stone house a bike ride away from New Paltz in Rosendale, NY is like a dream to me.  John Masters of John Masters Organics is living my dream!

401k Contribution Limit May Be Lowered for 2010

piggy_bank_leak-cr-03

According to CNNMoney, contribution limits for 401(k) in 2010 may be reduced due to low inflation.  Although the reduction may sound slim at $500 – limit will be reduced from $16,500 to $16,000 annually for those under 50 – it may not seem so paltry if you think about how much bigger your nest egg can be with $500 compounded plus dividends over decades.

IRS will announce the 2010 limit on October 15.  Until then, keep socking it away!

Shareen Vintage

DSCN0648DSCN0647

I finally made it to Shareen Vintage this week after months of procrastination and dilly-dallying.  I can easily get addicted to this place.  Located in Chelsea, Shareen Vintage has two big rooms full of girly vintage goodness.  I spent a bit over an hour browsing through a ton of dresses, skirts, gowns, belts, etc. and in a moment of rare self restraint, purchased five items rather than the twenty I wanted.  First up is this grey and pink diagonal striped tunic/dress with all over pleats.  The sleeves are puffy and the whole piece is lined.  For a taller person, this can be a tunic, but for me, it definitely works as a knee length dress because I’m so short.  Come see more…

Extreme Black and White Home

Deepest-Darkest-Beauty-6

Black and white decor is probably one of the most popular and easy to execute interior decor themes.  I think everyone can appreciate a dose of black and white in their home – but is there such a thing as too much of the good stuff?  This case might be coming dangerously close…

Mackage for a Month

mackage fall 2009-1

My heart skipped a beat when I read that Mackage – the source of my favorite coats of all time – will open a freestanding store in the Meatpacking District with their whole line starting September 1st.  Unfortunately, they will stay for only one month.

Meanwhile – This Julia coat is singing my name.  I’m actually afraid to go the store – I have perfectly good coats….I don’t need to spend $650 buckaroos for another one….do I?

Home Farming With Style – Sort Of

081909_rg_biohomefarm_01

When I was a kid, I had an aunt with two green thumbs.  She handled all the gardening and landscaping of our Florida home.  Unfortunately when I was old enough, I got stuck with mowing and weeding the lawn.  Being the typical, lazy kid that I was, this was something I loathed.

Somehow, in my later years, I have developed a fondness for plants–much to the consternation of my better half–and would like to try growing our own ‘organic’ veggies.  How to do this in our NYC apartment without being stabbed by my spouse?  Haven’t quite figured that out, yet.  However, Philips has an interesting and pseudo-stylish indoor farming concept.
