Subway Shoes

My average commute from home to the office is 1 hour and 15 minutes each way. I’m on the subway anywhere from 40 to 55 minutes, then either walk the rest of the way, or take the crosstown bus (SL….O…OOO…WWW….WW), or take the shuttle provided by the company and building. The shuttle is the best bet, but it comes and goes at precarious times and not too reliable.
The above pic of a crowded subway platform is very similar to what I experience daily going to and from work. Getting a seat for the 40 to 55 minute ride is highly unlikely and I am most very likely squished like a sardine most of the time with barely a pole to hang on to.
All that calls for what I have dubbed Subway Shoes. Subway Shoes are footwear that are comfortable and will allow you to deer sprint down the stairs for the train (if you’re that type) and stand and zen balance your way through the demented NYC subway rush hour while reading your four pound hardback high fantasy saga and avoiding elbows and asses. Subway Shoes have a lot of work to do, but they have to look cute too. Once you hit the office, you can then break out your sky high pretty shoes.
Here’s a free Donkee tip – standing with feet hip width apart with slightly bent knees facing sideways (meaning NOT towards the front nor back of the train) ALWAYS increases your balance at LEAST five fold. Do NOT lock you knees like a cheerleader! Your face will end up on my barely there chest – I won’t be happy about it, so I will have to gouge your right eye out. Trust me on this stance, it works 90% of the time – I’ve tested it in my twenty odd years of subway riding…back when the L train was a trainwreck with people smoking weed in the cars and Bedford Ave was a BAD subway stop. The other 10% of the time – nothing will save you except for a seat which you will never get – so just grab something or someone. Or fall.
Here are some of my picks for Subway Shoes:

Elizabeth and James ‘Jessi’ Flat – $235

DV by Dolce Vita ‘Calvin’ Flat – $79.95

Sam Edelman ‘Jeneva’ Flat – $129.95

Steve Madden ‘Tuxxedo’ Flat – $69.95

Beverly Feldman ‘Flashy’ Flat – $176.90
Now HERE are what you would break out once you hit the office!!!

Linea Paolo ‘Glam’ T-Strap Sandal – $139.95

Everything you have written is so true. I’ve never had a commute under 45 minutes and I don’t know how women in New York do it in heels.
I love the Jeneva flats–so rich-looking and comfortable.
